Capitan William George Manby

Who invented the extinguisher, Ambrosio Godfrey or William George Manby?

The first fire extinguisher was patented in England in 1723 by Ambrosio Godfrey, a famous chemist. It was a fire extinguishing barrel that contained an extinguishing liquid that acted by means of the explosion of a tin chamber that contained gunpowder, the dispersion and atomization of the liquid caused the extinction of the fire.

The modern fire extinguisher was an invention of William George Manby, born in Norfolk in 1775, was, in addition to military and publicist, a great inventor. However, its most famous and important contribution was this bomb that is considered today as the first fire extinguisher in history. It is a captain who came up with the idea of creating an instrument that would extinguish the fire with greater effectiveness by observing the inability of a group of Edinburgh firefighters to reach the upper floors of a burning building.

The first fire extinguisher in history

The first extinguisher was made up of four metal cylinders, three of which were filled with water up to half and the fourth contained compressed air. In the upper part of the cylinder there was a small hose and a valve. When the valve was operated, the pressurized air came out of the metallic cylinder dragging the water with it and thus extinguishing the fire. It was patented in the United Kingdom in 1818.
